In total 627 national and international participants came to the 17th International Congress for Renewable Mobility in Berlin on 20 and 21 January 2020 to discuss the current political framework conditions of the industry. More than 80 speakers and moderators from Europe and overseas presented their concepts, case studies and studies for the discussion on the mobility of tomorrow.

With a panel discussion and in 12 forums, various topics such as "CO2 targets for new vehicles", "Power-to-X", biomethane, bioethanol, "New drive and mobility concepts", sustainability, "Biofuels in aviation and shipping as well as in agriculture and forestry" were presented and debated on the two congress days.

In the opening plenary session on 20 January 2020 from speakers from politics and science presented their analysis of suitable measures for climate protection through sustainable, renewable mobility. Arthur Auernhammer, MdB and Chairman of the Board of the German Bioenergy Association, balanced the importance of biofuels for the reduction of greenhouse gases in transport. Afterwards, Dr. Tamara Zieschang, State Secretary in the Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure, spoke about climate protection goals in transport and the related questions of enforcement and acceptance of the measures.

The chairman of the "National Platform Future of Mobility" convened by the Federal Minister of Transport, Prof. Dr. Henning Kagermann, presented the results of the expert commission to date. The expert commission involved relevant stakeholders as well as specialist expertise and politics in the debate on tomorrow's mobility. Prof. Dr. Claudia Kemfert, German Institute for Economic Research (DIW Berlin), addressed the current developments in climate protection legislation and explained which transport measures that can be implemented in the short term will lead to more climate protection. In a study, DIW Berlin examined in particular the contribution that biofuels can make to reducing financial risks to the federal budget.

Dr. Jörg Adolf, Stakeholder Relations Manager at Shell Deutschland Oil GmbH, spoke about the importance of alternative fuels for a leading company in the mineral oil and gas industry. Finally, Prof. Dr. Jürgen Krahl, President of the Technical University of East Westphalia-Lippe, explained the perspectives of the combustion engine and alternative fuels within the framework of international climate protection concepts.

An exciting panel discussion followed in the afternoon of the first day of the congress on the subject of "Climate protection from the exhaust: perspectives in the vehicle population and the CO2 targets for new vehicles", followed by further presentations on "International climate protection strategies".

On the second day of the congress, a total of 12 specialist forums offered a broad range of topics from all areas of renewable mobility: German and international experts presented news from technical development, research, certification, market analysis and trade and discussed with the congress participants.

As in previous years, the "Fuels of the Future" congress took place in the CityCube at the Berlin Exhibition Grounds. The patronage of the event was assumed by the Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure.

The specialist congress, which was organised by the German Bioenergy Association (BBE), the Union for the Promotion of Oil and Protein Plants (UFOP), the Federal Association of the German Bioethanol Industry (BDBe), the Association of the German Biofuels Industry (VDB) and the German Biogas Association (FvB), was again characterised by a wide range of topics in 2020.

In the exhibitor foyer with a total of 18 congress partners from the industry there was plenty of opportunity for professional exchange and networking.

The 18th International Congress "Fuels of the Future 2021" will take place in Berlin from 18 to 19 January 2021.
